Cut Out Sugar Cookies Recipe

Ingredients:

Special equipment: Your favorite cookie cutters, a rolling pin, and piping bag and tips

Sugar Cookies:

  • 1 pouch of Maja’s Sugar Cookie Mix
  • 6 tbsp butter (non-dairy or regular)
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup vegan butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1-3 tablespoons plant-based milk
  • ½ tsp peppermint extract or ½ tsp almond extract (optional)

    Instructions:

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F. Then add the butter and milk to a small bowl and whisk or beat on medium speed until the texture is creamy. Add the baking mix and beat until well combined. Since you will be cutting the cookies into fun shapes, be sure to place the dough in the fridge to set and cool for at least 2 hours.

Set the cookie dough out on a clean surface and bring it back to room temperature before rolling it out. Be sure to use flour on the surface as you roll the dough until it is about 1 inch thick.

Find your favorite holiday cookie cutters and begin to cut out your cookies. Gently set them on a baking sheet that is lined with parchment paper. This mix should make about 12 cookies. Bake for 11-12 minutes or until the cookies have turned to a nice golden brown. Be sure to let them cool completely before you begin to decorate!

While you are patiently waiting for your cookies to bake and cool, you can begin to make the buttercream frosting. First, add the vegan butter to a bowl and beat it until it reaches a creamy texture. You can then add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and beat again until smooth. If you are choosing to use the peppermint or almond extract as well, you can add that in next and combine. If you want your buttercream to be a little smoother and thinner, you can always add a splash of milk if necessary.

If you’d like to add a little extra holiday flair, you can always add a little food coloring to your frosting! The company Supernatural offers vegan and dye-free options, and we highly recommend them! Check out their food coloring here
